“My task is not to debate whether I’m a Jew or not, but to figure out what kind of Jew I am. For me, finding a secular Jewish community with progressive politics fits my version of that identity.”
In the Middle: Race, Justice and the Ashkenazim
Taught by Chris Messinger
This class will consist of five sessions meeting on March 14th, March 21st, March 28th, April 4th, April 18th. Participants are expected to attend all sessions.
Class meets from 6:00 - 9:00 PM at the BWC Building at 1762 Beacon Street in Brookline*.
"In The Middle" focuses on the experience of Ashkenazi Jews in the US, with three goals - a deeper understanding of Jewish identity in an American context, the ways in which anti-semitism plays out in a traditional and modern sense, and a goal of concrete individual and collective action for racial and economic justice. We will explore our families history and patterns, as well as the transition of Ashkenazi Jews from the margins to the middle (and back again?). Course includes weekly readings (encouraged, not demanded), and 2-3 small-group meetings outside of regular course time. Suitable for all ages, this course does contain significant emotional content. Not sure if this is the right spot for you? Please feel free to reach out to course instructor Chris Messinger beforehand.
